Underground Engineering Center

Full trench-to-restoration sequence with QA checklists. Project specification controls.

They are not a substitute for project specifications, PE-stamped calculations, or ALFA confirmation of product ratings for your service conditions. Project-specific verification required.

Purpose

Give civil/MEP and QA/QC teams a practical buried thermoplastic pipe installation sequence framed around ASTM D2321 practice — adapted to project geotechnical and specification requirements.

Who this is for

Site engineers, inspectors, contractors, and consultants specifying flexible uPVC/CPVC gravity or pressure systems in trench.

Engineering principle

Flexible thermoplastic pipe shares vertical load with surrounding soil. Controlled sidefill support and limited deflection are the design intent — not rigid-pipe beam behaviour.

Installation sequence

  1. Site investigation — soils, groundwater, rock, traffic loading assumptions from the design.
  2. Trench planning — width, depth, shoring/batter, spoil, dewatering plan.
  3. Excavation — achieve grade/invert; protect trench walls; remove unsuitable materials.
  4. Foundation — stabilize soft soils per geotech; rock requires cushioning layer as specified.
  5. Bedding — place and level approved bedding material to project thickness/class.
  6. Pipe placement — handle without impact damage; check ovality/cuts; align joints.
  7. Jointing — solvent or elastomeric per product system and TDS.
  8. Haunching — compact under springline; avoid voids — critical for deflection control.
  9. Initial backfill — pipe zone fill and compaction lifts per specification.
  10. Compaction verification — density/method tests as required by the project.
  11. Final backfill — upper trench to grade; traffic structures as designed.
  12. Testing & inspection — joint tests, deflection checks, CCTV if specified.
  13. Restoration — surface reinstatement per owner requirements.

Direct technical answer: Underground

This engineering resource explains Underground for designers and reviewers. Use it to clarify definitions, methods, and limitations—then apply project-specific data.

Method, assumptions, and limits

Document formulas and variable definitions when performing calculations. Call out where soil modulus, temperature derating, or surge dominates the result. Link outcomes back to product standards and application hubs for procurement.

Frequently asked questions

What information is needed to quote Underground?

Standard, size/pressure class, jointing system, quantities/lengths, fittings list, delivery location, and any submittal/test requirements from the specification.

Can I substitute one pipe standard for another at the same nominal size?

Not without review. Dimensions, pressure classes, and test methods differ across standard families.
