Purpose
Give civil/MEP and QA/QC teams a practical buried thermoplastic pipe installation sequence framed around ASTM D2321 practice — adapted to project geotechnical and specification requirements.
Who this is for
Site engineers, inspectors, contractors, and consultants specifying flexible uPVC/CPVC gravity or pressure systems in trench.
Engineering principle
Flexible thermoplastic pipe shares vertical load with surrounding soil. Controlled sidefill support and limited deflection are the design intent — not rigid-pipe beam behaviour.
Installation sequence
- Site investigation — soils, groundwater, rock, traffic loading assumptions from the design.
- Trench planning — width, depth, shoring/batter, spoil, dewatering plan.
- Excavation — achieve grade/invert; protect trench walls; remove unsuitable materials.
- Foundation — stabilize soft soils per geotech; rock requires cushioning layer as specified.
- Bedding — place and level approved bedding material to project thickness/class.
- Pipe placement — handle without impact damage; check ovality/cuts; align joints.
- Jointing — solvent or elastomeric per product system and TDS.
- Haunching — compact under springline; avoid voids — critical for deflection control.
- Initial backfill — pipe zone fill and compaction lifts per specification.
- Compaction verification — density/method tests as required by the project.
- Final backfill — upper trench to grade; traffic structures as designed.
- Testing & inspection — joint tests, deflection checks, CCTV if specified.
- Restoration — surface reinstatement per owner requirements.

Adverse conditions
- Rock — cushion foundation; remove protruding points; follow project rock excavation details.
- Soft soils / groundwater — dewatering, geotextile separation, foundation improvement as directed by geotech.
- Traffic loading — cover depth and pavement structure from design — do not invent cover minima here.
- Settlement / poor compaction — primary causes of excess deflection and joint stress.
- Construction equipment — keep heavy plant off the pipe zone until cover/compaction allow.
Pre-installation checklist
- Approved product standard, class/SN or PN, and joint type match the MAR/submittal.
- Pipe storage protected from impact and excessive UV/heat per ALFA/site practice.
- Bedding/backfill materials approved and available.
- Dewatering and trench safety plan in place.
- ITP hold points agreed with inspector.
Installation checklist
- Invert/grade verified before placement.
- Joints assembled to marks / full insertion.
- Haunches compacted without lifting pipe.
- No debris in pipe bore.
- Deflection monitored if required during backfill.
Backfill checklist
- Lift thickness per specification.
- Compaction method matched to material.
- No large rocks against pipe wall.
- Tracer/warning tape if specified.
QA/QC checklist
- Batch/traceability records retained.
- Joint pressure or air tests as specified.
- Deflection measurements within project limits.
- NCR/CAR closed before covering critical zones (if required).
Final inspection checklist
- As-built invert and alignment recorded.
- Manhole/structure connections sealed as designed.
- Surface restoration accepted.
- Handover documents filed (MAR, ITP, test records).
