Over 70% of Saudi Arabia's drinking water originates from thermal and reverse osmosis (RO) desalination plants operated by the Saline Water Conversion Corporation (SWCC). This desalinated water is slightly mineral-deficient and low in alkalinity, making it chemically aggressive toward metallic pipes (ductile iron and carbon steel), which suffer internal tuberculation and red water complaints unless expensively lined.

Because uPVC has an elastic modulus (~3,000 MPa) approximately 70 times lower than steel, water hammer pressure wave velocities in uPVC are significantly lower. A sudden valve closure generates pressure surges roughly 50% lower in uPVC than in ductile iron or steel.
