FLEXIBLE PIPE BEHAVIOR

Unlike rigid concrete or clay pipes which must support the full vertical earth load entirely through ring crushing strength, flexible uPVC and CPVC pipes deflect slightly (typically < 3%), transferring vertical soil overburden into the surrounding sidefill soil through passive lateral earth pressure.

  • Trench width must be optimized: minimum (OD + 300mm) up to (OD + 600mm).
  • Bedding thickness must be at least 100mm (150mm in rock excavations).

International standards (ASTM D3034, EN 1401, DIN 19534) specify an allowable long-term diametral deflection of ≤ 5.0% for gravity sewers and ≤ 7.5% for pressure water lines, verified with proving mandrels 30 days post-installation.

2. Why is "haunching" considered the most critical installation step?

The haunch zone (from pipe bottom invert up to the springline) provides the essential passive soil wedge that prevents the pipe from flattening downward under surface wheel loads. Voids under the haunch will cause excessive deflection.

3. What minimum cover depth is required under Saudi highway traffic?
