MECHANICAL SHOCK RESISTANCE

ISO 3127 & ISO 179 Falling Weight & Charpy Impact Test Report (at 0°C)

To ensure thermoplastic pipes do not experience brittle shatter during transportation, trench side handling, and rocky desert soil backfilling, ALFA AL-ARABIA conducts continuous falling weight impact testing in accordance with ISO 3127, BS EN 744, and DIN 8061. Pipes conditioned in refrigerated ethylene-glycol baths at 0°C ± 1°C are struck by heavy hemispherical steel drop hammers from heights up to 2.0 meters.

Standard Impact Test Parameters (ISO 3127 & BS EN 744)

• Striker Geometry: Type d25 (R=12.5mm) for small pipes / Type d90 (R=50mm) for large diameters
• Striker Falling Mass: 0.5 kg to 7.5 kg calibrated weight
• Drop Height: 2,000 mm (2.0 meters) free-fall guide tube
• Conditioning Temperature: 0.0°C ± 0.5°C in chilled liquid bath (min 60 minutes)
• Statistical Criterion: True Impact Rate (TIR) ≤ 10% at 90% confidence level
• Failure Definition: Any through-wall shatter, cracking, or visible rupture
Specimen Nominal Size Standard & Class Striker Mass (kg) Drops Tested Ruptures / Breaks True Impact Rate (TIR) Result
110 mm OD (DN 100) DIN 8062 PN 16 1.60 kg 32 drops 0 ruptures 0.0% (Spec ≤ 10%) PASSED
160 mm OD (DN 150) DIN 19534 SN 8 3.20 kg 32 drops 0 ruptures 0.0% (Spec ≤ 10%) PASSED
200 mm OD (DN 200) ASTM D1785 Sch 80 4.00 kg 32 drops 0 ruptures 0.0% (Spec ≤ 10%) PASSED

Why High Impact Strength Prevents Site Installation Breakage

Under-stabilized or highly filled PVC pipes exhibit severe cold-embrittlement, leading to brittle longitudinal cracking when dropped during trench placement or when angular aggregate backfill is placed over the pipeline. By maintaining strict control over virgin polymer molecular weight (K-value 67-68) and high-dispersion impact modifiers, ALFA pipes retain high toughness and ductility even under severe mechanical impact shock.
